Village Improvement Programme At Kampung Sena, Pekan
The Kuantan Centre’s youth wing, headed by Sis. Latha Ramasamy, initiated a community service project in Kampung Sena, an Orang Asli settlement in Nenasi in Pekan district about 100km from Kuantan on Sunday 14 August. The project for the poor and needy was held in conjunction with Krishna Jayanthi (22 August).
During the visit, clothes were distributed to all the village folk while 11 hard-core families received bags of rice.
The youths had earlier collected and sorted out the clothes and packed them neatly into bags. In addition, the youths had collected some donations from among themselves and the Centre purchased 20 bags of rice, 5kg each.
Six youths and four adults participated in this first of a series of activities to be conducted in the village.
Besides carrying out a needs survey of the village, we held a very fruitful discussion with the Tok Batin on the type of assistance the villagers needed.
So far, one old man requires financial aid and we have decided to take up the case with the Welfare Department. We also plan to go back to village in October for a health screening exercise for 200 children.
Kampung Sena houses 50 families of low socio-economic status and is part of another two Orang Asli villages lying adjacent to each other. The settlement has the potential to be developed into a Village Improvement Programme (VIP).
