An Elderly Health Care Seminar was held at Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Penang, Harbour Trade Centre, Macallum Street Ghaut, Penang on Saturday 9th July 2011 from 9.30 a.m. to 12.00 noon. This seminar was open to all the five Centres in Penang State. About 50 persons of various age groups, mostly from Penang Centre, and some from the North East District Centre, the Seberang Perai Centre and the Sungai Nibong Bhajan Unit participated.
The objective of this seminar was to create awareness of the importance of health and its related issues faced by the elderly. Elderly health care is most important as Malaysia is rapidly developing a large ageing population.
The seminar provided information about ageing society, knowledge on caring for elderly parents, and imparted health tips on ensuring the younger generation maintains good health into their old age. The specific topics covered included: Aging and Mental health by Br. Dr. Aruljoethy, Honour Our Parent Everyday (HOPE) by Sis. PS Ong, Issues and Challenges faced by Elderly in Malaysia by Sis. Yoga and Caring for Elderly by Br. Dr. Rethanavelu. The last topic focused on Stroke, Dementia, Geriatric Nutrition (Nutrition for the aged), Falls Prevention and Alternative Therapy.
Sis. Chiang Khai Lin coordinated the seminar and presented several poignant video clips depicting dementia, relationship of father and son, and the love-bond between an elderly couple. The participants involved themselves with great interest and gaiety; and raised many interesting questions. The seminar concluded with everyone singing “Mother Love” which was composed by Brother Dato’ J. Jagadeesan.
This seminar was a condensation of the 1½ days seminar conducted by the Central Council of Malaysia at Mahsa College, Petaling Jaya on 19th & 20th of March 2011.
